Liberal Party of Canada to Hold Leadership Election on March 9, 2025

On January 6, 2025, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and as Prime Minister. He confirmed that he would step down as soon as his successor was chosen. This decision has set the stage for a leadership race within the party, with the election scheduled to conclude on March 9, 2025.

The Liberal Party’s National Board has outlined the rules for the leadership election, including deadlines for candidacy and voter registration. Candidates must announce their intentions by January 23, 2025, and those wishing to vote in the race must register by January 27, 2025. The voting process will end on March 9, with the new leader announced on the same day.

Currently, the only declared candidates are Ontario Liberal MP Chandra Arya and former Montreal MP Frank Baylis. Other prominent figures, including Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, are still considering entering the race. Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland is also rumored to be a potential candidate.

This leadership race is significant as the new leader will become the 24th Prime Minister of Canada and lead the country into the 2025 federal election. Trudeau’s decision to step down allows the party to reset and focus on its future, with many hoping the new leader can unite the party and prepare it for the upcoming challenges.
